Why hydrogel, and not butter or toothpaste? What the evidence shows.

Checked against NHS, Mayo Clinic and ANZBA guidance4 min readUpdated June 2026
The short answer

Butter, toothpaste, oil, and haldi all trap heat against the skin and raise the risk of infection, which makes a burn worse. After cooling with water, a clean covering, such as a sterile hydrogel dressing, helps; folk pastes do not.

Every family has its burn remedy passed down through kitchens: butter, toothpaste, mustard oil, turmeric paste. They share one fatal flaw. They form a layer that seals heat in at the very moment you are trying to draw it out, and they introduce material into a wound that needs to stay clean. What helps is the opposite: cool the skin, then keep it clean, moist, and protected.

Do this, in order

Cool first, with water

Twenty minutes of cool running water is the treatment with real evidence behind it.

20 minutes

Keep it clean

A wound free of pastes and grease is one a doctor can actually assess and that is less likely to get infected.

Cover with the right material

A non-stick, sterile dressing that keeps the area moist supports healing.

Skip the kitchen cupboard

Nothing edible belongs on a burn.

What helps

  • Cool with water, then keep the wound clean
  • Use a sterile, non-stick dressing
  • Keep a minor burn moist while it heals
  • Choose materials studied for wound care

What harms

  • Apply butter, ghee, or any oil
  • Use toothpaste
  • Pack the burn with turmeric or other pastes
  • Cover with fluffy cotton that sheds into the wound

BurnFrost sterile hydrogel dressing

BurnFrost is a sterile hydrogel dressing made largely of purified water, with tea tree oil, designed to cool and cover a minor burn after the water step. It is the clean alternative to the cupboard remedies.
